Man in History. Russia in the 20th Century
School History Competition by International Memorial
This series of illustrations was created for selected texts from Man in History. Russia in the 20th Century, an annual history competition for school students organized by International Memorial from 1999 to 2021.
The competition encouraged students to explore 20th-century history through the lives of ordinary people, drawing on family archives, letters, photographs, oral histories, and personal testimonies. It brought individual experience and everyday life to the fore, connecting family histories with broader historical events. Memorial Deutschland
The competition was discontinued in 2022 following the Russian Supreme Court’s decision to dissolve International Memorial. Memorial later stated that continuing this work with school students in Russia had become unsafe for participants, their families, and teachers.
