An illustrated story about Sandarmokh, a site of mass executions during Stalin’s Great Terror in Karelia, northwestern Russia.
The burial site was discovered in 1997 following years of archival and field research by members of Memorial and independent researchers, including Veniamin Iofe, Irina Flige, Ivan Chukhin, and Yuri Dmitriev. Their work helped reconstruct the history of the executions and identify thousands of people killed and buried there.
The illustrated material was created especially for August 5, the annual Day of Remembrance at Sandarmokh, when the names of those executed are read aloud in commemoration of the victims of the Great Terror.
